Do you have Thyroid problems, if so, you could be magnesium deficient. Ninety percent of Americans don’t get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium from their diet. In today’s article, you will learn how Magnesium deficiency may be causing you to have thyroid problems.

Today, there is a rampant rise in thyroid issues from hypothyroid, hyperthyroid and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I can keep going on and name some more, but you can already see that many different forms of thyroid dysfunction exist.

Now, what I am about to tell you is very important, as it is overlooked by many practicing physicians worldwide, and, in fact, is one of the most crucial elements in your body when it comes to your thyroid health.

I am speaking about magnesium, today I won’t be going into to much detail about magnesium for that check out my previous article by my good friend Morley Robbins aka: The magnesium man. Okay, lets jump right into it!

How is your Thyroid Health connected with Magnesium?

Proper thyroid function demands a fine balance between calcium and magnesium.

When the calcium level is high in your bloodstream, the thyroid gland releases calcitonin. Calcitonin slows down the activity of the osteoclasts found in bone. This decreases blood calcium levels in your body.

When calcium levels decrease, this stimulates the parathyroid gland to release parathyroid hormone. But for the Calcium system to work, it must have proper Magnesium levels to function. (1,2)

Continuing on, as Dr. Wilson has stated:

The higher the level of hair calcium, in general, the lower the effective activity of the thyroid gland.  This occurs because one of the effects of T3 and T4 is to lower calcium levels in the tissues and at times, in the blood.

Calcium is crucial for proper thyroid health, but for calcium to properly function, it must have its friend, magnesium.

This is a fascinating study showing that Hyperthyroid autoimmune patients have an altered Magnesium response in their bodies. You can read the study, really good stuff (3)

cal-mag-phos-scaleThis is just a small fraction of how Magnesium is crucial for your thyroid health. when one realizes that magnesium is necessary for over 300 different enzyme reactions.

It is involved in the enzyme reactions that take place with glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, with nucleic acid synthesis, DNA and RNA transcription, amino acid activation, and many other enzyme reaction, one can see that it is interconnected with everything.

As far as I can tell, most studies today are pointing to the fact that people with hyperthyroid and hypothyroid have magnesium deficiency problems.

The next big question that comes up is, how do you know if you have thyroid problems?

Common symptoms of thyroid problems:

  • Weight gain
  • Low body temperature
  • Constipation
  • Hair loss
  • Dry flaky skin
  • Fluid retention
  • Slow reflexes
  • Fatigue
  • Rapid aging
  • Slowness of thought and cognition
  • Goiter (enlarged thyroid) – not always present
  • Depression
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome
  • Puffiness around the eyes

If any of these apply to you, I would suggest looking for a functional medicine doctor or someone trained in functional thyroid assessment and making an appointment.  Especially, since this is such an overly undiagnosed condition.

If you haven’t seen my video and article on how cortisol can actually cause you to make rt3, which is the inactive from of thyroid hormone in your body, then get your ass to it!

All jokes aside, your thyroid health must be a top priority.

Okay, enough of the geek talk. These are my favorite magnesium foods and supplements for enhancing your thyroid health.

My top choices of magnesium to help your thyroid:

  1. Bone broth
  2. Transdermal magnesium
  3. Jigsaw Health Magnesium

(A great, inexpensive and easy to use way get more magnesium is with Epsom Salts. Use them in your bath and relax.)

As you can see my friends, your thyroid health is a multifactorial mechanism, for optimal health. I hope from today’s post that you can benefit from this information in hopes of optimizing it.
