The Thyroid Secret
Did you know, 1 in 3 Americans (and more worldwide) are secretly suffering from a debilitating disease and nobody is talking about it. You could be one of them. The culprit? Thyroid disease. Find out why conventional medicine is failing you and what you can do to recover your health.
Women are 5 to 8 times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.
What exactly IS The Thyroid Secret And Why Should You care
Being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s while living in a 2nd world country is a feat in an of itself. For that I am eternally grateful. Getting the proper diagnosis for any thyroid disease isn’t common. Yet, there I was, suffering with:
- Low Grade Fever
- Extreme fatigue
- Skin tag
- Brain fog
- Candida (didn’t know at the time)
- Brittle hair
- Excess earwax
- Mood swings
- Poor circulation
- Dry cracked heels
- Low libido
- Inability to lose weight
I was a mess.
And my doctor who spoke english as a second language, did an in-office ultrasound and said, you have Hashimoto’s in about 10 minutes. Looking back, I realize how astonishing that was. I didn’t realize it, of course, because I was in for a journey no one (in their right mind) could have prepared for.
Most doctor’s in the USA do not properly diagnose thyroid disease. It’s an uphill battle for many patients who don’t feel good (even if they do have thyroid knowledge and ask the right questions). Luckily and amazingly, I didn’t have that problem. However, what transpired afterwards was the beginning of a downwards spiral into a physical, non-Zumba ability, brain-fogged, weight-gaining, acne-having, sleep-walking zombie. (my poor little butterfly-shaped gland and my body would take a physical and mental beating in the years and months to come)
I had been exercising, taking my little magic pill and eating what I considered to be healthy. So, why and how did I get worse than I was before my diagnosis? In hindsight, I wasn’t privy to The Thyroid Secret and the many twists and turns that can come from having thyroid disease.
One of the hardest and best lessons I learned after my Hashimoto’s thyroid diagnosis was that despite the fact that my doctor’s told me my thyroid labs were normal when I was a teen, they were not. The TSH is not the gold standard blood test. I needed to listen to my body and my symptoms.
Living in Costa Rica taught me many valuable lessons. Letting go of having to be busy all the time, learning to live in the moment, being able to be happy with less and extreme patience. All of which, served me well. However, not being able to get to the root cause of my issues because there weren’t any doctors that really understood thyroid disease, started to slowly tear down what I had learned about having patience. The doctor that originally and properly diagnosed me was 2 hours away through winding roads and he believed that giving me levothyroxine – for the rest of my life – was the best and most effective plan to give me my life back. Boy was he ever wrong.
Soon, I would learn that there is so much more to healing thyroid disease, regardless whether I was eventually put on the correct medicine (nature-throid) or not.
Once I realized that the only medication, at the time, that I could get for my Hashimoto’s was levothyroxine and that there were other possibly better options unavailable to me, I immediately decided to advocate and Thyroid Nation was born.
At that time, I reached out to the fabulous Dr. Izabella Wentz and shared my story. She was gracious and helpful and we became ‘virtual’ friends. Fast forward 3 years as my family and I made the difficult decision to move back to the United States, after 8 glorious years in Costa Rica, we landed in another foreign (to us) land, Colorado. Because we had family move to the Centennial State just a few years prior, we had visited for the holidays. It was calming and beautiful and seemed like a natural transition after living in what we considered to be paradise. Pura Vida!
The rest is ‘almost’ history. Dr. Izabella, her husband and her adorable dog, Boomer, lived just an hour and a half away and I had the privilege of being invited to her house for an interview. What a wonderful and delightful opportunity. It was then that we learned about what Izabella wanted to call the documentary she was working so feverishly to bring to the world, The Thyroid Secret.
We had so much fun doing a bit of yoga and having some good ole fashioned girl talk. Then we got down to business and set up shop in her lovely den sitting on the most elegant blue couch, I’d ever seen. What better place to have a thyroid chat than on a blue sofa? Talking thyroid came natural to us both, obviously. I’m proud to be included in such a grand effort to help raise awareness for such an important topic. Will you join us?
