Recipe: Very Berry Breakfast Smoothie

This is hands down my favourite breakfast smoothie. This morning I woke up nice and early, and when I saw it was warm out I decided to celebrate the dawn of summer with a very berry smoothie.

This is essentially a strawberry based smoothie, but what turns it into that Hulk colour is the key ingredient: spinach. Now, I know that spinach isn’t everyone’s go-to smoothie ingredient and could be a little off-putting, but trust me when I say, it’s a game changer. It adds a richness and depth that really complements the other ingredients and is also packed full of vitamins. I’ve tried this smoothie without the spinach and it’s just been meh.

I love smoothies because they are so quick and easy, and just so good for you. Chia seeds are full of magnesium, protein, good fats, and potassium. Oats are high in fibre and carbohydrates which keep me full for hours. Milk is rich in calcium and protein. Strawberries are extremely high in vitamin C, and bananas bring vitamin B to the table, which is really important for healthy skin, liver and eyes. Lastly, spinach is high in vitamin A which helps protect cells from free radicals.

This is basically youth in a glass.

The stuff you need

14 strawberries, frozen

1 banana peeled and frozen

1 handful of spinach

1 cup of milk

1 date, pitted

1 tablespoon chia seeds

1/4 cup of oats

How to make it

Pop the frozen fruit and milk in a blender, followed by the remaining ingredients. Blend until thick, smooth and creamy.

*Tip: If you want to make it even thicker, freeze half the milk in an ice-tray, and add it in with the other frozen ingredients. However, make sure that your blender is powerful enough before trying this.
