Paleo vs. AIP (Autoimmune Paleo) — Which Do I Choose?

foods

Paleo and the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) are quite similar.

Paleo: This is an eating plan focused on nutrient-dense foods. It avoids most processed foods and empty calories. Dairy, legumes, grains, and refined and processed sugars are to be avoided. Quality meat, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, fruit, and seafood should be eaten. Paleo is premised on eating in very much the same way that a caveman would have, that is, without the refined foods so prevalent in our diets today.

AIP: While similar to Paleo in many respects, AIP is stricter and is focused primarily on soothing inflammation, healing the gut and fighting antibodies. AIP eliminates nuts and seeds, as well as nightshades such as cayenne and sweet potatoes. While the list of “No” foods can seem daunting, the list of “Yes” foods is extensive! AIP is not permanent, and is usually recommended for about three to four months.

About the Author

photoStine-Vitani Olstad-Sowah was diagnosed with ADD, Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism. For many years, she had no idea why she was tired, angry and suffering from brain fog. When she was diagnosed, she decided to learn as much as she possibly could about her condition. Armed with knowledge and a positive attitude, Vitani decided to face Hashimoto’s instead of being angry at it. She started an entertaining, quirky YouTube channel, MyWeirdButterflyLove, where she talks about the disease, lifestyle changes, supplements, AIP, symptoms and the daily struggles thyroid warriors face. Vitani’s aim is to spread awareness and to show people who are having a hard time that they are never alone in this. Like her Facebook page, and follow her on Twitter.
